Just lost a full day's pay on a vinyl fence because I trusted the wrong post hole digger rental

Rented a two-man auger from a place in Springfield last week for a big vinyl job, thinking it would save time. The thing was so worn out it just spun in the clay without biting, and we spent six hours fighting with it before giving up. Ended up having to hand dig all 24 holes, which put us a full day behind schedule. Anyone have a go-to rental spot they trust for tough ground?

Rental gear can be such a gamble. Sometimes it's the operator, not the tool. Hard clay needs a specific technique to get the auger to catch.

Specific technique" sounds a bit much for digging a hole.

Yeah, brooket43 is right about the technique, but some of those rental augers are just plain shot. The teeth are worn down to nothing and the gearbox is so loose it has more play than a toddler. You can rock it and pour water all you want, it's not biting into hardpan if the machine itself is junk. I've started asking to see the bit before I even load it on the truck. If it looks like it's been used to dig through a rock quarry, I walk away.
