A client never paid me for a month of work in 2015.

Always get a contract, even with friends.

Yeah, I always thought a handshake deal was fine for small jobs. Then a family friend ghosted me on a painting project and I was out two weekends of work. Now I write everything down, no matter who it is.

Learned this the hard way too. I always figured with friends or family, a verbal deal was enough. Then my cousin backed out of helping me move last minute, and I was stuck renting a truck alone. Now I make sure to text or email the details, even for tiny favors. It just saves so much headache and keeps things clear. Trust is great, but having it in writing is BETTER for everyone.

My dad helped neighbors for years without a single written agreement. Insisting on texts for every little thing feels like it misses the point of community. Sometimes trust is messy, but it's how real relationships are built.
