Honestly, we all just follow trends without question. That "lacquer is best" idea got passed down so many times we stopped looking at other finishes. Sometimes a total stranger with nothing to sell shows you how stuck you really are.

Totally true about passing down ideas without question, @sagestone. We do the same thing with way bigger life stuff than just wood finish.

Man, oil changes every 3,000 miles is the perfect example. My dad drilled that into me, and I did it for years without a second thought. Turns out modern synthetic oil and engines can go way longer, but that old rule just got stuck in my head.
