Showerthought: My neighbor's old phone made me rethink my upgrade habit
I was helping my neighbor, Frank, set up his new phone last week, and he was still using a model from 2019. He said, 'This thing still does everything I need, why would I pay $1000 for a slightly better camera?' It hit different because I just got the latest flagship, and honestly, my photos don't look $1000 better. Have you ever held onto a gadget way longer than the reviews said you should?

Wait, a 2019 phone is considered old now? That's barely five years! My daily driver is from 2017 and it still works fine for calls and maps. The whole thing feels like a trick, like they just slow the old ones down so you feel forced to buy. Frank is totally right, my sister's new phone photos are not that different from mine. We're all getting played.

Right? My 2018 phone still takes decent photos (honestly).

It's the same with cars... my dad drove his truck for 15 years while I was always leasing something new. The constant upgrades feel normal until you see someone just... content with what works. Makes you wonder what else we're pushed to replace before it's actually broken.
