I thought those TikTok hair masks were just a fad, but my sister proved me wrong
For months I kept seeing these DIY hair mask videos, especially one with avocado and honey. I figured it was just messy nonsense. Then my sister, who has super dry hair from living in Arizona, tried the avocado one for three weeks straight. Her hair went from feeling like straw to actually having some slip and shine, which I could feel when I braided it for her. I still wouldn't use it in the salon, but it made me look at some of those kitchen ingredients differently. Has anyone else had a client come in with surprisingly good results from a home remedy they were sure would fail?

Honestly, I've seen the exact opposite way more often. That avocado mix? It's a nightmare to fully wash out and can leave a weird film. For every person who gets lucky, I get a client with buildup or hair that feels even more dry and brittle. I had one who used a banana mask and it took two clarifying washes to get all the little bits out. Some of those kitchen things just don't mix well with hair science.

Tried that avocado mess once and my hair felt coated for days. Switched to just mashing a ripe banana with a tablespoon of plain yogurt, which rinsed out clean. The key was blending it completely so no chunks got stuck.

Wait, doesn't the film from an avocado mask usually mean it wasn't mashed smooth enough? I had a similar issue the first time because I left little bits. The next time I used a fork to really smash it into a paste, then mixed in the honey until it was totally smooth. It washed out fine and left my hair soft. Maybe the problem isn't the avocado itself, but how well it's mixed before you put it on?
