Appreciation post: My old team's quarterly hikes in the state park

At my old job, we used to have regular hikes in the local state park led by our department head. Since moving to remote work, those trips have stopped, and I really miss the casual talks on the trail. Are any companies still doing group hikes like that, or is it just a thing of the past?

Those casual talks on the trail were probably overrated anyway.

Funny you'd say that @thomas815, I almost walked right past the last good water source before a dry stretch because I was zoned out. An older guy at the creek basically pointed at my bottles and shook his head, which was all the talk I needed. You find help in weird little moments out there.

Wait, are you serious? That's the part I live for. You hear the most honest stories from total strangers when you're both just walking. I learned how to fix my leaky tent from a retired engineer I met near Glacier Point. To write that off as small talk just seems to miss the point of being out there with people.

On the Pacific Crest Trail last year, I used to shrug off trail chats too. But a talk with a thru-hiker changed my mind when she explained how a simple water tip saved her trip. Now I get that these conversations are a big part of why we go out there.
