Unpopular opinion: I used to skip the breathing parts in guided meditations, but a free online class focusing just on that got me to pay attention.

Hard disagree. The whole breathing focus thing can totally backfire. Sometimes paying that much attention to your own breath just makes you hyper aware of it, like when someone tells you not to think about blinking and then you can't stop. For me it just turns into anxiety about doing it "right" instead of actually calming down. I'd rather just listen to ambient sounds or a story.

Ruby's point about hyper-awareness is something I've seen a lot. But is it really that serious? People act like focusing on your breath is some huge task that can go wrong. It's just breathing, right? I mean, do we need to make a crisis out of every little thing?
