The 50mm lens I ignored for 3 years is now my only lens
I spent $1,200 on zoom lenses thinking I needed range for travel shots. Then a photographer in Austin told me my photos looked flat because I zoomed instead of moving my feet. I switched to a used 50mm f/1.8 for a month and the difference in depth and sharpness was obvious. Has anyone else gone minimalist with gear after a harsh critique like that?

Man, that Austin photographer nailed it. I got the same kind of wake up call years ago when a friend looked at my shots and asked why everything looked like it was taken from the same spot. Selling the zooms hurt, but once I sat with a 50 and forced myself to frame with my feet, the photos just had more life to them. It's a rough lesson to learn after dropping cash, but that simplicity kind of frees you up to think about light and timing instead of gear. Good on you for sticking with it.
