Update: That old frame from the thrift store made my paintings look better

I got it for a couple bucks. The worn-out surface actually helps the colors stand out more.

Oh man, this is so true and it happens with way more than just frames. It's like the small signs of use on things just add a whole other layer. My favorite mixing bowl has this one big scratch inside, and somehow my cake batter just looks better in it. Or how a pair of jeans feels more 'you' after the knees get worn thin. That beat up frame does the same thing, it makes the art feel lived in and real, not just new and sort of separate from everything else.

Totally get that, I found this beat up gold frame once that had little chips in the paint. My landscape looked kinda flat before, but in that frame the greens suddenly felt way deeper. New frames from the store can look too shiny and perfect sometimes. The old one just gives the whole piece more of a story, you know?

Disagree on this one honestly. Sometimes a clean, simple frame lets the art speak for itself without adding extra noise. I've seen pieces where an old frame just ends up fighting with the colors or style, making the whole thing feel messy. It really depends on the artwork, but a perfect match isn't always about looking lived in. A sleek new frame can feel just right, like the art is the star and not the shiny new thing around it.

You're right about that, @paul_rivera, old frames give art way more depth.
