My old professor told me to ignore the small finds, but a button changed my whole dig

Back in college, my archaeology professor always said, 'Focus on the big picture, not the little stuff.' He meant we should care more about building layouts and big artifacts, not things like broken pottery or nails. I took that to heart for a long time. Then, on a volunteer dig at a 19th century farm site in upstate New York, I was sifting through what looked like plain dirt. I almost tossed a tiny, plain metal button. But I kept it. When we showed our finds to the site lead, she got really excited. That button was from a specific New York militia uniform from the 1820s, which totally changed our idea of who lived there. It proved the family had a member in the local guard, something no record had shown. Now I look at every little thing. Has anyone else had a 'small find' totally flip the script on a site?

Faking a jet manifest would actually be pretty hard to pull off convincingly. You'd need to know a lot of specific codes and procedures that aren't public. It's not just a random piece of paper someone could type up.

Serious question, why do so many people forget to check their audio levels before a shoot?

Ugh, I feel this so hard. I had a wedding shoot where the officiant's mic was basically in the red the entire ceremony, and fixing that audio was a nightmare. My dumb trick is I literally say "checking levels" out loud while I watch the meters, then I make the client say their full name. Saying it out loud makes it a real step I can't skip.

Just logged my 500th hour of bottom time this year

My milestone was hitting 300 hours and realizing I've spent more time with barnacles than with my own family. At least the barnacles are quiet and don't ask for money.
