Look at the labels on those containers sometime. In my experience, a lot of them aren't actually recyclable even if they have the symbol, which just adds to the landfill problem. Your mileage may vary, but we switched to a shared family cooking night where everyone picks a dish, and it cuts down on waste and makes movie night more special. It's a small shift, but teaching kids where food comes from can change their habits for good. Plus, homemade popcorn tastes way better than takeout, in my opinion.
