Hot take: Buying a used influencer's camera gear is a terrible idea

I picked up a Sony A7III last year from a girl who blew up on TikTok for her aesthetic coffee videos. 2 months after she peaked, she sold everything. Paid $1800. The shutter count was like 50k. Thought I got a deal. First wedding gig the autofocus started glitching. Took it to a shop. The sensor had heat damage from those long studio lights she ran 12 hours a day. Repair cost almost as much as a new one. Now I stick to buying gear from old wedding photographers who baby their stuff. Anyone else get burned buying from a flash in the pan creator?

The real gamble is whether they properly stored the gear.

Figured out heat damage is way more common with video work than photos.

My buddy Mark snagged a Canon R5 from a fitness influencer who did those sweaty home workout videos. The thing had this weird haze in the viewfinder and kept overheating after 20 minutes of shooting. Turns out the humidity from all that heavy breathing and sweat in her apartment basically corroded the internal electronics.
