Burnt my third batch of sweet potato fries in a row last night

I kept trying to get that crispy outside soft inside thing everyone raves about, but nope. I set the temp to 400 and shook the basket every 5 minutes like the recipe said, still came out like charcoal. Turns out my air fryer runs way hotter than it says on the dial, I checked with a thermometer I borrowed from my neighbor in Austin. Anybody else have to adjust their cook times by a lot because of a hot fryer?

Hey @mark_chen62, so you're telling me my neighbor's thermometer might be lying to me too? At this rate I'll be buying a new air fryer just to prove I'm not a total kitchen disaster. Guess I'll try 375 and actually watch the basket like a hawk next time.

I gotta push back on blaming the fryer here. You said yourself you set it to 400 and shook the basket every 5 minutes. That's basically the standard method and most ovens run a little hot or cold, it's not a huge deal. Sweet potatoes have a ton of sugar so they burn fast if you don't watch them like a hawk. Try dropping the temp to 375 and checking at the 8 minute mark instead of sticking to some rigid schedule. The thermometer might be off too, those cheap ones from a neighbor aren't always accurate.
