Hot take: I was dead wrong about TikTok trends being random luck
For months I thought the whole "this song is going viral" thing on TikTok was just random chance. But last week I ran a test after a buddy claimed the algorithm pushes posts that get high completion rates within the first 2 seconds. I posted 3 similar clips on my cooking account around a 7-second loop and one hit 50k views while the others got under 200. Turns out the one that blew up had a text overlay asking a question right at the start, which kept people watching longer. Anyone else have a moment where they realized the algorithm actually follows consistent patterns?

Funny you bring this up because I had a similar thing happen with my dad's old woodworking channel we ran a few years back. We kept posting these ten minute build videos and getting nothing. Then one day he accidentally uploaded a 30 second clip of just a router bit spinning in slow motion with no title. That thing took off like crazy. We figured out pretty quick that attention spans on there are shorter than a hiccup. Makes you wonder how much of the "viral magic" is really just people understanding the simple mechanics behind it, don't it?

Respectfully, I see it different... high completion rates matter but a lot of that viral stuff still comes down to random timing and luck. You can nail all the patterns and still get ignored.

Really nailed it with "attention spans on there are shorter than a hiccup" - that's the whole game right now. @murray.robert mentioned timing and luck, but I'd push back a little. Yeah luck plays a part, but people ignore how much the platform's algorithm shapes what gets seen. It's not random, it's just hidden. You can post the same thing at the same time on different days and get totally different results. So what's really going on with that slow motion router clip - was it the length, the sound, or just the algorithm finally deciding to push your stuff?
