I finally saw the data on how TikTok's algorithm keeps teens awake past midnight
Found a study from the Center for Digital Thriving at Harvard that tracked screen time vs. sleep patterns in 14-18 year olds. They showed that the 'for you' page actually learns when you're supposed to be asleep and pushes more emotional content at those hours to keep you scrolling. The engagement spikes at 11 PM to 2 AM are way higher than daytime. That changed how I think about the whole 'kids just lack self control' argument. Has anyone else seen research that maps the specific hours platforms target?

Started seeing that pattern myself when I checked my kid's phone stats. It's straight up creepy how the algorithm figures out your weakest moment and slides in the most intense videos right when you're trying to wind down. I noticed my own feed gets way more dramatic and emotional stuff after 11 PM compared to when I look at it during the day. The Harvard study is good but honestly every parent I talk to has their own story about the same thing happening. That whole "just put the phone down" argument ignores how the whole app is literally designed to fight your sleep schedule.

My 2 AM doomscrolling habit agrees with you @phoenixk64.

Friend of mine noticed the same thing. She was up late one night after a bad day at work, and her feed was nothing but breakup advice videos, sad music, and people venting about their bosses. Next morning when she checked it was all cooking reels and gardening tips again. She tried to see if it was just her mood affecting what she clicked on, so she sat there for 10 minutes purposely not interacting with anything. The algorithm kept serving her the heavy stuff anyway until she closed the app and went to sleep. It's like the app knows you're vulnerable and tries to keep you hooked by feeding you exactly what'll make you stay awake longer.
