Our neighborhood lost dog flyer going viral changed my algorithm view

I always thought social media algorithms only cared about big global stories. Then a simple lost dog poster from my street got thousands of shares in a day. I noticed it got boosted after local people commented and tagged friends, showing algorithms push content with quick local interaction. Now I get that small personal posts can spread wide if they hit that early engagement sweet spot.

That local burst is key like ryan793 said, but the algorithm also looks for shares outside your immediate friend group. Once it jumps those circles, that's when it really takes off.

Wow, my friend's "lost cat" flyer did the same thing last month! It blew up after just a few neighbors shared it.

But what if it's not just the algorithm? Sometimes real people just care a lot and spread the word themselves.

Read an article a while back that explained this exact thing. It said algorithms are basically trained to notice when something gets a burst of comments and shares from one area. That lost dog post is a perfect example. It triggers the system to think, "oh, this matters to this group, let's show it to more of them." Makes total sense now why those small local posts can blow up.
