A weird trick for getting old fridge drain lines clear

Had a 15 year old Whirlpool fridge last week with a frozen drain pan, the line was totally blocked. Instead of taking the whole back panel off, I tried a turkey baster with hot water and a bit of dish soap. Shot about 8 ounces of it down the tube from the top, let it sit for 10 minutes, and it flushed right out. Saved me at least an hour of work. Anyone else got a good hack for those clogged drains?

Is it even worth the effort on a fridge that old?

Honestly, it depends on how handy you are. I just fixed my own 15 year old fridge with this same problem. If the drain pan underneath is still good and the tube isn't cracked, clearing it properly can buy you a few more years. But if you see any cracks or bad rust when you take the back panel off, then it's probably time to let it go.

Why would you risk making a bigger mess with a turkey baster? That hot water and soap could just push the gunk deeper and cause a worse blockage later. On a fridge that old, the real problem is probably the whole drain system is corroded or cracked. A quick fix might get it working for a week, but then you're back to square one with water all over your floor. Taking the panel off and doing it right the first time is the only way to be sure.
