Can we talk about how everyone says you need a $300 meter for fridge compressor checks?

Last week in a tight spot, I used a basic $40 unit from my truck and it gave me the same ohm reading on a bad start winding as my buddy's fancy one. Has anyone else found the high-end gear is just overkill for most calls?

Yeah I used to be all about the high end gear too until I saw carter.mila's point about basic meters doing the job. That bad start winding test last week with my cheap meter really changed my mind lol.

Right? The cheap stuff gets it done.

Totally agree, that fancy gear is mostly for show. A basic meter checks continuity and ohms just fine for like 90% of compressor calls. Save the cash for beer, not another tool that does the same job.
