Warning: That older climber's advice about rope placement saved me from a nasty fall
An old timer in Portland told me I was setting my friction hitch too low on the tail, and I shrugged it off for months until I nearly decked because the rope slipped through the bite. Has anyone else had a specific tip from a veteran that totally changed how you set up your climbing system?

Funny you mention that. I read somewhere that most new climbers set their prusik way too close to the hitch and it basically turns into a slipknot. Old guys just know stuff from falling on their heads a few times, I guess.

Learned that one the hard way last year when my prusik locked up solid six feet off the deck lmao.

Exactly, gap between the hitch and the prusik should be about a hand width. I've had too many sketchy moments where it grabbed too early and I was stuck just hanging there like an idiot.
