PSA: "It depends" is the correct answer way more often than people want to hear
I keep running into people who want one hard rule for everything, and it bugs me more than it should. Last week a guy at the gym asked me if cardio is better in the morning or at night, and I gave him about four real answers based on his schedule and his knee. He walked off annoyed because I did not just pick one. Same thing happened when my sister asked me whether she should rent or buy, like there is one right answer for every town and every income. The honest answer is almost always the boring one: it depends on your situation, and anyone who skips that part is selling something. I have watched too many folks follow a one size fits all rule and get burned, so I stopped handing those out years ago. What is something you used to think had one clear answer until life showed you it did not?
Does it really matter that much if one guy at the gym walks off annoyed though? I get what you're saying about "it depends" being true most of the time, but people want simple answers because simple answers are easier to act on. If you give someone four answers they have to do the work of picking one, and most folks just want to be told what to do so they can stop thinking about it. You not handing out rules saves you from blame, sure, but it also means you never actually help anyone make a call. Sometimes the kind thing is to just say "morning, based on your knee" and let them figure out the rest later.
