Rant: an old guy at the DMV told me to stop telling long stories, and now my friends say I'm a different person
So last month I was at the DMV on a Tuesday waiting to renew my license, and this guy in his 70s next to me just stares at me and goes, 'You tell a story like you're getting paid by the minute.' I had just spent 10 minutes explaining to the whole row how I got a dent in my bumper, and he wasn't wrong. It stung at first, but he had a point. I started timing myself when I tell people things. Now I give the short version first and only add stuff if someone asks for more. My buddy Marcus noticed it before I even told him about the DMV thing, which was weird. He goes, 'Did something happen to you? You usually take 20 minutes to say what happened at the store.' I told my sister the other day about losing my keys and it took me maybe 30 seconds instead of 5 minutes. So my question is, has anyone else gotten called out for talking too much in a random place like the DMV or the grocery line? And did you actually change anything or just forget about it by dinner?
How long did it take before the short version felt normal? Like was there a week where you kept catching yourself mid story and cutting it off? I ask because I had a similar thing happen in a checkout line, lady behind me said I gave her the whole movie when she just asked how my day was. I tried the short version thing for like 3 days and then slipped right back into my old ways. Curious if you had to practice it or if it just stuck after the DMV guy said it.
