Warning: That perfect week in June at my cabin turned into a nightmare
I rented a small cabin near Lake Placid for a week last June. For the first three days, everything went smoothly. The weather was great, the fishing was good, and I caught two nice trout on day two. Then on day four, a storm rolled in and knocked the power out for 36 hours. The real problem was the propane detector started beeping nonstop. I had to pack up and leave a day early because I couldn't figure out where the leak was. Has anyone else had a vacation go from great to bad that fast?

Man, that sounds rough. A similar thing happened to me a few years back at a rental on Lake George. First few days were perfect, then the AC died right in the middle of a heatwave. In my experience, those propane detectors can be finicky sometimes, especially after a power surge from a storm. It might not have been a real leak, just the unit freaking out from the outage. Your mileage may vary, but I'd suggest keeping a battery-powered CO detector in your own gear for next time, just as a backup so you're not totally at the mercy of the cabin's equipment.

Brought a portable fan from home after that happened to me once. Made a huge difference when the AC went out again.

Oh man, "your mileage may vary" is exactly right with those detectors. I had a similar thing happen at a rental in the Adirondacks last fall. First two days were amazing, then the smoke alarm started chirping at 3 AM for no reason at all. Turns out the humidity after a rainstorm set it off. I ended up taping a pillow over it just to sleep, which is probably not safe but I was desperate. Your idea about bringing a battery powered CO detector is genius. I actually started keeping a small power bank and a portable fan in my car after that trip too. It's crazy how fast a perfect setup can turn into a complete disaster.
