My dad told me to just use a cheap tripod for astrophotography back in 2012. He was so wrong.

My old Velbon tripod from 2008 would shake for a full second after I touched it. You need real mass and a solid head to keep a long lens still at night.

Remember my first tripod was this super light aluminum thing. Tried to use it for some sunset shots with a zoom lens and the whole image just wobbled for ages after I tapped the shutter. Upgraded to a heavier set of legs and it was like night and day for those long exposures.

But a cheap one worked fine for my old DSLR. People get way too into gear sometimes.
