My uncle told me to just use my phone for astro photos at first

Honestly, I thought I needed a big telescope to start. He said to try my phone on a tripod for a month before buying anything. I got a shot of Orion's Belt from my backyard in Phoenix that I'm actually proud of. Anyone else start with something simple and get surprised?

That astrophotography book by Terence Dickinson always says to master the basics with what you have first.

Dickinson's book got me started with just binoculars.

Reminds me of my buddy who tried to get into it. He dropped a ton on a fancy tracker before he could even find Orion. Ended up selling it all and just using his dad's old DSLR on a tripod for a year. Got way better shots in the end.
