Just realized a DA sander with the wrong backing pad is a huge time waster
Swapped to a softer pad on my 6 inch DA for a hood job yesterday and cut my blocking time in half, no joke. Anyone else ever dial in their tools like that or am I late to the party?

Heard a pro painter say the same thing. Soft pad for the win.

My buddy tried using one of those stiff foam rollers on a really textured ceiling and it just left patchy streaks everywhere. He switched to a soft pad and it soaked up the paint way more even, no more fighting with the texture. So yeah, soft pad for the win is a real thing, especially if you don't want to spend an extra hour fixing mistakes.

Stiff pads have their place though. I did a whole boat hull with a hard pad and it cut through the old gelcoat fast without gumming up. Soft pads just load up and slow you down if the surface isn't perfectly flat. It's all about matching the job, not just going soft by default.
