Snapped a timing chain on a 2007 Honda Accord last Tuesday

I was pulling out of a client's driveway in Phoenix when the engine just died. No warning, no check engine light, just a loud clatter and then silence. Turned out the timing chain tensioner failed at 142,000 miles and the chain slapped the guides to pieces. Anyone else seen these VTC actuators fail early on the K24s?

Phoenix heat turned my Accord's "lifetime" chain into a "good luck" chain too, but mine at least made it to 158k before giving up. The mechanic said I should've heard it rattle, but I just thought that was my A/C compressor having a bad day. Now I check my oil every time I fill gas, which is probably just as pointless as praying for that tensioner to hold.

142k on a Phoenix car is actually pretty good for a K24 chain... mine went at 97k on my old CR-V out here in the heat. I was merging onto the 101 when it let go, sounded like someone threw a handful of bolts into a blender. Ended up with a whole new head because the VTC actuator snapped and sent metal through the oil passages... guess that's what I get for trusting Honda's "lifetime" chain.
