Stopped using a torque wrench on lug nuts after a buddy showed me his method

I always torqued everything to spec until last week when a 20-year veteran at the shop laughed and showed me how he just tightens them with a breaker bar by feel, and I haven't had a single come-back since - has anyone else found a spec you can safely ignore?

Isnt it funny how a lot of the "expert" advice we get is just covering their own butt? I see the same thing with cooking, people get all hung up on exact measurements and times but a good cook just knows when something looks and smells right. Or like my neighbor who spends an hour a day polishing his truck but the thing still runs like crap. We get so caught up in the details we forget the main point is just getting the job done right.

Right on, @stellat46. It's like that "expert" advice is more about their liability than actually helping anyone, you know? I see it with cooking shows too, they time everything down to the second but my grandmother just cooks by feel and it's always amazing. Makes you wonder how much of that "expertise" is just making people afraid to trust their own gut (and their own eyes and nose).

That "getting the job done right" part changes when a wheel falls off at highway speed.
