The $2,400 retainer that made me audit every invoice since

Last quarter I signed a new client for a monthly retainer, $2,400 a month for what I thought was a custom automation setup. After 3 months I noticed the reports they sent were just copied from a template, zero actual work on our data. I pulled every invoice from the last 6 months and found two other vendors doing the same thing, billing for generic service with no real output. Now I ask every B2B provider for a sample of their actual deliverable before I sign, has anyone else caught a vendor padding a retainer like this?

Wow, that is seriously infuriating. I cannot believe they just copied a template and called it work, that's not even trying to hide it. I had a similar thing happen with a "SEO specialist" who was sending me screenshots of the same dashboard numbers every month, turns out they never even touched my site. It's like they think we won't look close enough, but once you catch one, you start checking everything with a fine tooth comb.
