I read that the average American backyard shed holds over $1,500 worth of stuff they never use

I found this stat in a local news article about clutter last week. It made me go look in my own shed, and I found a brand new pressure washer still in the box from three summers ago. I completely forgot I even bought it. What's the most expensive thing you've rediscovered gathering dust back there?

Oh man, that pressure washer story hits home. I finally cleared out my shed last fall and found a whole unopened patio set, tags still on. My partner bought it on a major sale like two years ago and we just... forgot. It's wild how stuff just becomes part of the landscape back there. I bet half my neighbors have a brand new lawnmower or a stack of unused tools hiding in plain sight. That clutter tax is real.

My uncle's garage had a sealed box of Christmas lights from 1998. We found it when we helped him move in 2015. He swore he bought them for a big display and then just shoved them in a corner. The receipt was still inside, yellow and crisp. It's like stuff goes into a black hole the second it leaves the store.

Honestly that sounds more like a choice than a black hole. My dad has the same habit, buys stuff for a "project" and then it just lives in the package forever. It's not lost, it's just a decision to not deal with it. The receipt is proof he knew exactly where they were the whole time.
