My old shed was basically a black hole for garden tools until I saw a setup in Portland

I used to just toss everything into a single corner, which meant I spent twenty minutes looking for the trowel every spring. Then I visited a friend in Portland who had a simple pegboard wall with clear outlines drawn for each tool. I copied that idea with a $40 sheet of pegboard from the hardware store and now everything has a spot. Anyone else try something like this to stop the backyard tool hunt?

Saw a video once where a guy painted the shape of his tools right on the wall of his shed with bright spray paint. It looked awesome and you couldn't miss where anything went. Your pegboard idea is just as smart though, because you can move the hooks around when you get new stuff. I need to do this with my own mess of a storage closet. The clear outlines are the real game changer, it makes putting things away the easy choice.

That spray paint trick is actually called a "shadow board", it's a pretty common thing in professional shops. I mean, it looks super clean but you're right about the pegboard being more flexible, @oliver_stone15. The painted outline method locks you in forever unless you want to repaint the whole wall. My only issue with pegboard is the hooks sometimes pop out if you're not careful pulling a heavy tool off. Still, either way is miles better than my current system of just piling everything on a workbench.

Yeah it's like how a clean kitchen makes you want to cook, a clean tool wall makes you want to build stuff.
