Pro tip: that viral 'just be yourself' job interview take falls apart the second you test it in a real room
A recruiter in Columbus told me this line back in 2021 and I repeated it to about 40 people before I actually watched what it did in practice. I sat in on 3 mock interviews at a community center near Olentangy River Road, and the 2 folks who went fully unfiltered got cut in under 10 minutes while the ones who matched their answers to the actual job posting moved on. The take is wrong because 'yourself' isn't the thing being scored, the fit is, and nobody says that part out loud. Wait, cut in under 10 minutes? That is wild to me. Like they didn't even get halfway through the standard questions before the interviewer was done. I get that being "real" can mean rambling or oversharing, but getting shown the door that fast feels less like a fit issue and more like a vibe check that nobody warned you about. So basically the two people who thought they were being brave just got used as a lesson for the room? That is cold.
