A guy came in last week asking for the exact same cut he had in a photo from three years ago.
He pulled out his phone and showed me a picture from his wedding. Said he wanted to look exactly like that again. The thing is, his hairline had moved back a good inch since then. I had to explain that we could get close, but it wouldn't be a perfect match because his hair had changed. He was pretty set on it, though. How do you handle clients who are really attached to an old style that doesn't fit their hair anymore?

my scissors were good, but they weren't a time machine" - that's a hell of a thing to have to say to a client. I had to chuckle reading that, but I bet it was awkward saying it. Did he take it okay or did he get defensive? I imagine the high school photo guy had some stories to go with that hair. Sometimes you just have to be honest even when it's uncomfortable.

@gracethomas maybe people just want the haircut they loved, even if it's a little different now?

I had a client last year who brought in a picture of himself from high school, complete with a full head of thick hair. The man was nearly fifty now. I told him straight up that my scissors were good, but they weren't a time machine. Sometimes you just have to be the one to break the news that hair changes and styles have to change with it. I try to show them a modern version that keeps the same feeling but actually works with what they have now. It's a tough talk, but someone's got to do it.
