Finally realized I was dulling my shears by storing them wrong for 3 years

I used to just toss my clippers and shears in a drawer after cleaning them. Then last month a barber in Austin named Marco watched me put them away and said 'you're grinding the blades against each other every time you close that drawer.' He showed me how the magnet strip on his wall kept everything separated and sharp. My $200 shears feel brand new now after getting them resharpened once. Anyone else store their tools in a way that's ruining them without knowing?

Changed my mind completely. You're right, the magnet thing worries me now.

idk maybe the magnet strip could mess with the heat treatment over time

Actually that's a real concern with stronger magnets near precision tools. I've seen a few old-timer barbers insist on leather rolls or wooden blocks instead of magnetic strips for exactly that reason. The constant magnetic field can supposedly affect the molecular structure of the steel over time, especially with cheaper shears that have softer metal. A good middle ground is using those blade guards they sell for straight razors - keeps them separate without any magnetism involved.
