TIL a customer's comment about my neckline work changed my whole approach

He said my fades were clean but the neckline looked 'drawn on with a marker', so I switched from a trimmer to a foil shaver for that final pass. Anyone else get a piece of feedback that made you change a basic tool in your routine?

Wait, that's actually a foil shaver? I mean, I always thought those were for like, your face. I use a trimmer with no guard and just go super light on the pressure for necklines. It gives a softer blend that doesn't look so harsh. Maybe the foil is better for some people, but for me that super crisp line just looks a bit off. It's crazy how one comment can make you rethink your whole setup though.

Totally get what you're saying about the softer blend. I tried the foil shaver thing once for a sharp line and it looked way too severe, like I'd drawn it on with a marker. Went back to my old trimmer method the next day. It's wild how much of a difference those little choices make in the final look. Makes you wonder what else we're all doing just because we never stopped to question it.

Saw a barber online who said the foil shaver is really for final clean-up, not the whole line. That tracks with what @kimw57 said about it looking too severe on its own. Makes sense why blending it in with a trimmer works better for most guys.
