Update: my neighbor bet me $50 that gas grills can't do real BBQ, so I invited him to judge at my block party in Nashville last Saturday
He showed up with a clipboard and kept saying no pitmaster would ever touch a gas valve. I smoked two pork butts on my old Weber kettle with charcoal and applewood, and he gave one a 4 and the other a 9 without knowing they came off the same cooker. Turns out he scored the one that sat 40 extra minutes in foil higher. He paid me the $50 but still says it doesn't count as real BBQ. Any of you ever get judged by somebody who only cares about the fuel and not the meat?
Have you ever noticed how people pick a side and then stop using their eyes and ears? It happens with trucks (Ford vs Chevy), guitars (Fender vs Gibson), and now with smokers. Your neighbor had a whole theory about fuel, and his own taste buds proved him wrong, yet the theory survived the test. That tells you the label mattered more to him than the food. It is like arguing about the brand of pan instead of whether the eggs came out right.
