Watch out for cheap gaskets on offset smokers

I was at a comp outside Austin last weekend and my gasket blew out mid-cook on a $800 smoker I barely broke in. Had to use wet towels to seal the firebox door the rest of the afternoon, anyone else had this happen with the stock stuff?

My buddy had the exact same thing happen at a backyard cookout and it ruined his whole brisket.

Man, I used to be the guy saying stock gaskets were fine if you knew what you were doing. Thought everyone complaining was just cranky about spending money. Then mine gave out at 2am on a pork butt cook and I was shoving foil and an old rag in there. Changed my whole view on it. Cheap felt might seal tight on the first fire but it just doesnt hold up to the grease and heat over time. Now I check the gasket before every big cook and keep a spare roll of gasket tape in the truck. Its one of those parts you dont think about until youre eating ash with your brisket.

Taped a trash bag over mine once, looked real professional.
