Criticism from a client changed how I measure rooms for flooring

Last month in Tampa I had a customer point out that my measurement notes were off by half an inch on a corner. She was right, it was a sloppy mistake I had been making for years when I rush. Now I double check every angle with a laser measure before cutting anything, even on small bathrooms. Has anyone else had a specific piece of feedback that forced you to change your process?

Half an inch on a corner sounds small but I know that adds up fast, especially when you're cutting pieces to fit tight spaces. I bet that customer saved you a lot of wasted material down the road though. It's wild how one person pointing out a tiny thing can make you realize you've been doing it wrong for YEARS.

Did you think it was fine before too? I always figured half an inch was no big deal but she proved me wrong real quick.

Yeah but what about the visual stuff too? Like if you're off by half an inch on one side of a room and you split the difference across a whole floor, the eye catches it even if the tape measure doesn't scream at you. @amyh12 you're right that the material waste is real but I think the bigger problem is how it messes with patterns. Tiles, wood planks, whatever. That half inch creeps into the seam and suddenly your repeating pattern looks like it's having a stroke. One of my buddies had a job where the homeowner walked in and said something felt "off" about the whole kitchen but couldn't say why. Turned out every single cut was a half inch longer on one side than the other. Subtle but wrecked the flow totally.
