Shoutout to the guy who showed me how to properly index a 1x drivetrain

I kept having chain drop issues on my bike for months, and I thought it was just the narrow-wide chainring being worn out. Turns out, I was making a basic mistake with the B-screw adjustment. A mechanic at my local shop in Austin told me I was setting the upper pulley too far from the cassette, which let the chain skip off under load. He had me set it so the pulley barely clears the biggest cog, and the difference was night and day. I've seen a bunch of folks online make the same error, always blaming the chain or ring first. Have you ever had a simple adjustment fix a problem you were sure was a worn part?

Buddy of mine fixed a skipping chain just by torquing his derailleur hanger bolt.

Totally feel you on that. Sometimes the simplest fix is the one we overlook the most. Glad your buddy got it sorted out!

Same deal with my gravel bike. Had a skipping chain that drove me nuts for weeks. Turned out the derailleur hanger was bent maybe two degrees. Straightened it with a hanger alignment tool and the thing shifted like new. Everyone always jumps to chain wear or cassette, but that hanger gets overlooked constantly.
