The shop I work at insists on using degreaser for every chain clean, and it's wrong
We had a customer bring in a high end waxed chain last week, and the new guy soaked it in our standard citrus degreaser. It took me three hours to strip that mess and re wax it properly. Degreaser ruins the wax coating and forces a full redo, while a simple hot water and brush clean preserves it. How do other shops handle waxed chains without wrecking them?

But isn't a full degrease sometimes needed for a really dirty chain?

Yeah, a full soak in solvent can be the only way sometimes.

Wasn't there a big article about this in one of the bike mags last month? They said to just use a stiff brush with some soapy water for a waxed chain, never a degreaser. The whole point is the wax is in the rollers, and solvent just washes that out completely.
