How my daughter's first project made me welcome family in the forge

I used to think my blacksmith shop was too risky for my kids to be around. But when my ten-year-old asked to help make a simple letter opener, I gave it a shot. Showing her the basics and watching her careful hands changed my mind about involving family. Now I see it's a good way to pass on skills and spend time together.

Turn off the forge and let them do the cold work first. My kid started by just polishing finished pieces with sandpaper, then moved to simple filing. You keep total control of the hot stuff while they learn the feel of the metal. It's all about watching their every move and setting those hard rules before anything gets warm.

Cold work first makes sense. It reminds me of how I learned to bake, starting with mixing ingredients before ever turning on the oven.

Letting a ten year old near a forge sounds wild to me. That's some serious trust in their motor skills.
