My favorite hammer handle split right down the middle yesterday

I was working on a big leaf spring knife, about 3 hours into shaping the bevels. The hickory handle on my go to 2.5 pound cross peen just gave out with a loud crack. I've heard people say you should oil your handles every few weeks, but honestly, I think that's overkill for a shop tool. I only did it maybe twice a year. Now I'm looking at a $40 replacement handle and a project on hold. Has anyone found a specific oiling schedule that actually works without being a huge chore?

My grandpa swore by a light coat of boiled linseed oil every new moon, basically once a month. It sounds like a lot but it takes two minutes and I haven't cracked a handle since I started doing it.

That "once a month" schedule is the real key. It's not about fixing a problem after it starts, it's about stopping it before it ever happens. A tiny bit of regular care beats a major repair every time. Your grandpa had the right idea with simple, consistent upkeep.

My old shop teacher in high school always said to oil handles every 300 hours of use. That stuck with me because it ties care directly to the work you do, not just some random calendar date. It's the same with anything made of wood or leather, they need maintenance based on how hard you use them, not just when you remember. Letting stuff go until it breaks is always more expensive and annoying than the two minutes of upkeep. Your hammer is a perfect example of that pattern.
