Unpopular opinion: quenching in used motor oil is lazy and ruins your heat treat consistency.

I switched to a dedicated canola oil bath after 3 blades came out with soft spots from that gunk, has anyone else tested their quenchant temp with a thermocouple and realized how much it drifts?

Funny enough I used to temper blades in my oven until my wife caught me and now I'm banned from using it for anything food related. Now I just use a toaster oven out in the garage with a PID controller strapped to it.

@theas28's PID toaster oven setup sounds legit, but cheap veggie oil works fine if you keep it warm.

Stick with motor oil if you're lazy about temps, but you're right about the drift - I track mine with a thermocouple and it swings 20 degrees if the garage door opens.
