My uncle's kitchen renovation advice backfired so hard

My uncle Mike, who claims he's done like 12 flips (which is a lie), told me to save money on my backsplash by using peel-and-stick tiles instead of real subway tile. He swore they'd hold up fine as long as I cleaned the wall with rubbing alcohol first. Well, I did exactly what he said, and two weeks after my kitchen reno in Austin, the tiles started peeling off one by one right above the stove. The heat from cooking literally turned the adhesive into goo, and I caught one sliding down the wall while I was making spaghetti. I ended up spending $340 to have a professional rip them all out and install real tile, plus another $90 on drywall repair from the sticky residue. Has anyone else gotten DIY advice from a relative that ended up costing you more in the long run?

Bought a cheap laminate countertop from Home Depot instead of saving for quartz because my cousin said it'd be fine, but the seam started bubbling up after a year from moisture and I had to drop $600 on a full replacement. Learned the hard way that paying a little more upfront saves way more cash and headache down the road. Now I just nod at my cousin's advice and do my own research instead.

Dude that sucks so bad. Really feel for you, especially dropping that kind of cash after trusting your cousin's advice. It's rough when you try to save a buck and it just ends up costing way more in the long run.

600 bucks is cheap for a full replacement honestly. My buddy replaced a laminate counter that failed the same way, seam split right over the dishwasher. Cost him 1200 for a basic quartz slab at a local fab shop. Home Depot laminate is just particle board with a thin plastic shell, one spill near the sink and it swells up fast. Your cousin probably meant well but nobody thinks about how much steam and water a kitchen actually sees every day.
