Took me 3 tries to get a wooden insert to fit in my Tainted Grail box

I dunno why I thought cutting foam core for a custom insert would be easy. First try I measured wrong and the whole thing was too loose, pieces sliding around everywhere. Second try I glued everything before checking fit and it bulged the lid up by a quarter inch. Finally on the third go I cut everything dry first, test fit it piece by piece, then glued it. Has anyone else ruined a perfectly good foam sheet by rushing the measurements?

Nah I gotta be honest I think you're overthinking this entirely lol. Foam core is literally the cheapest material to mess up with, like what did you lose maybe a dollar per sheet? Measuring stuff once and just going for it with glue is totally fine if you've got any spatial awareness at all. Half the charm of a custom insert is that it looks a bit janky anyway because you made it yourself. If you wanted perfect factory fit you'd just buy the official one. Honestly all that test fitting and dry cutting sounds like a huge waste of your evening when you could have just eyeballed it like a normal person and had it done in 20 minutes lmao.

Gotta say I'm with the blade condition people though not exactly in the same way. It's nice that you can bang something out in 20 minutes but not everyone's brain works like that. Some of us need to see it fit right or we just can't move on to the next step. I've messed up so many cuts because I thought I had good spatial sense and then realized the foam was off by 2mm and everything slid around. It's frustrating when you're trying to enjoy the process and it feels like you're fighting the material instead of working with it. I get why someone would want to test fit instead of just hoping it works out.

Blame the cheap utility knife blades for half of it, @simon_carr. Dull blades crush the foam core instead of cutting it clean, so your measurements get thrown off by ragged edges. Swapped to a fresh blade on my third try and suddenly my spacing was dead on. Nobody talks about how much blade condition matters for tight fits like wooden inserts.
