I finally got a clean bead on that 2-inch stainless pipe in the Quincy plant.
For years I'd rush the root pass on tight spaces and always ended up with some undercut, but last week I slowed way down, kept my rod angle steady, and it came out perfect. My foreman, Mike, said it was the best he's seen from me on that alloy. What's one small change in your technique that made a big difference for you?

My first clean bead looked so good I almost took a picture for my mom. Then I remembered I still owe her for the welding school she paid for.

My welding instructor said the first good bead is a free sample.

My instructor in Tulsa called it a confidence trick. He said that first perfect bead makes you think you've got it, then reality hits. It's a nice trick while it lasts though.
