Heard a guy at the library say that 'Moby Dick' is just about a whale and now I'm mad

He said it with a straight face too, like the whole book is just Ahab chasing a fish. I read that thing twice and the whale is barely a character, it's about obsession and revenge. Has anyone else run into people who totally miss the point of a classic?

Wait, people are ACTUALLY saying Moby Dick is just about a whale? That's wild.

God the whale isn't even the point, it's like saying Hamlet is about a guy who can't make up his mind. I had a coworker once who swore up and down that the whole book was just a boring story about whaling. I tried to explain the whole Ishmael surviving at the end and how the white whale represents this unknowable force that drives people to destroy themselves. He just shrugged and said "sounds like a book about a whale to me." Drives me up a wall when people reduce everything down to the most surface level reading possible. Like, sorry you don't want to engage with anything that requires a little thought.

Is it just me or do people do this with so many things nowadays though? It's like they read the back cover and think they've got the whole story figured out... I've seen people do the same with movies and even songs, where they take everything at face value and miss the deeper meaning completely. The whale is just a symbol for the thing we can't catch, you know? Like how everyone's chasing something they'll never really hold onto, whether it's money or fame or some old grudge. But nah, some folks just see a big fish and a wooden boat and call it a day. It's part of this bigger thing where people don't want to sit with something hard or complicated, they just want the easy answer and move on.
