My book club started hiding who suggests books, and debates improved.

Everyone now focuses on the book's ideas instead of the suggester's taste.

Makes sense. Cuts out the bias before the discussion even starts. Just have to judge the book itself.

Reminds me of when my book club did that with short stories. We spent twenty minutes arguing about whether the writer was a man or a woman before we even talked about the plot.
