Shoutout to that $8 thrift store copy of East of Eden
I read Grapes of Wrath in my book club back in March and everyone kept saying it was Steinbeck's best. I pushed through but felt like the structure was all over the place. Then I grabbed a beat up East of Eden from Goodwill in Portland for 8 bucks last week. The character depth and that whole theme of choosing your path just hit way harder for me. Has anyone else found a classic they liked way more than the 'must-read' one?

Oh man, I used to be the person telling everyone Grapes of Wrath was the only Steinbeck worth reading. I had this whole thing about how East of Eden was too long and melodramatic. Then I actually sat down with it last year and realized I was just being stubborn. The whole thing with Cal and Aron and that speech about "timshel" completely wrecked me in a way Grapes never did. So yeah, I get it now.
