Hot take: My pointing trowel broke on a Friday and my next job looked way better

I've been using the same cheap pointing trowel for like 8 years and it finally snapped in half last Friday while I was repointing a retaining wall in Northridge. Picked up a new WHS brand one from the supply yard Monday morning and my joints came out cleaner and faster than they have in ages. Has anyone else noticed a big difference after switching out a basic tool you thought was fine?

Does a new tool just make everything feel easier somehow?

Oh absolutely, it's like a little burst of motivation out of nowhere! Something about using a fresh tool just makes the whole task feel less heavy and more fun. I always get that little spark of excitement when I try something new, even for a boring chore. It's like your brain gets a reset button and suddenly everything clicks better.

You gotta think about the psychology behind it too. There's something about the clean, unused tool that tricks your brain into thinking you're starting fresh with everything else in your life. It's like the tool itself hasn't been tainted by any past failures or boring sessions, so you get to pretend you're a whole new person using it. The smell alone, like a brand new notebook or that faint plastic scent on a new gadget, is enough to get the dopamine going. That little reset is probably why people buy gear they barely even need, just to chase that feeling.
