That fancy mortar color additive wasn't worth the headache
I spent $80 on a color additive for a fireplace job I did last month in Lakewood. The packaging said it would give a consistent antique red tone, but after mixing it in, the color came out patchy and way darker than the sample. I had to tear out about 30 bricks and redo them with plain mortar, which cost me an extra 4 hours of labor. Has anyone else had bad luck with those powdered pigments?

Ugh that patchy antique red sounds like a total nightmare. I mean, I've had a similar thing happen with a cheaper brand where it looked fine in the bucket but then dried all uneven and almost purple in spots. It's such a kick in the teeth to spend that much time and money just to have to tear it all back out, especially when the sample looked so good in the store.

My coworker painted her whole kitchen that shade and ended up calling a guy to tear it all out the next week.
